Innovative Community Participation in South East Melbourne

Standard programs miss the point when your interests, culture, or access needs do not match the group on offer. Staying home becomes the easier option, and isolation follows. Innovative community participation is NDIS support for community involvement designed around you, including approaches that do not fit a traditional program.

Melbourne Care Ability helps participants in South East Melbourne take part in community life in ways that reflect their goals. That might mean a tailored activity, a new way of joining a local interest, or a short-term project that builds connection. You choose the direction. We help design the support so it is practical, safe, and actually something you want to do.

What is innovative community participation, and why you need it

Innovative community participation supports people to take part in community life in new or individual ways. It is used when a person’s goals do not fit neatly into a regular group, centre program, or standard community access shift.

You might need it if existing groups are not accessible, not culturally relevant, or simply not interesting. Connection still matters. An individual design gives you a way in without forcing a program you will not attend.

It sits near community participation and group activities. Those supports are often the right choice for regular social and civic activities, or for a centre-based group. Innovative participation is the option when the design itself needs to be different. We will recommend the simpler support if it already does the job.

Our innovative community participation process

  1. 1

Step 1: Start with the interest

We ask what you want to be part of, what you have already tried, and what stopped it working.

  2. 2

    Step 2: Design the approach

We shape a practical way to take part, including access, transport, culture, and whether other people are involved.

  3. 3

    Step 3: Trial and agree

You review the idea and the service agreement before hours are used on something you do not want.

  4. 4

Step 4: Run it and refine

We try the approach, then change it if it is not leading to real participation.

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from regular community participation?

Regular community participation helps you join social, civic, and community activities, often in established ways. Innovative community participation is for approaches that need a different design because standard options do not fit your goals, culture, or access needs. Both require funding in the plan.

Do you run a fixed activity timetable?

Not as the starting point. We design around the person. A small group may still be part of the idea if that is what you want, and group or centre activities may be the better support if you want a set program.

Can the activity reflect my culture or faith?

Yes. Tell us what respectful participation looks like, including language, gender, food, prayer, or family roles. We build that into the design.

Will you pay club fees or equipment?

Activity costs, memberships, and personal equipment are often not part of the support itself. We will tell you what the NDIS support can fund and what you would need to pay another way before you join.

What if I am not sure what I want to try?

That is a valid starting point. The first conversations can explore interests without locking you into a program. We still need a goal clear enough to write into an agreement before ongoing hours begin.

Design participation that you will actually use

Tell us what you want to be part of, or what has not worked before. We will see whether innovative community participation is the right support, or whether a simpler option fits.
