Daily Tasks and Shared Living Support in Melbourne

Shared housing only works when everyday tasks are fair, clear, and actually done. Dishes, medication reminders, cooking, and personal routines become flashpoints when everyone assumes someone else will cope. Daily tasks in shared living are NDIS supports for people who live with others and need help with the daily tasks of that home.

Melbourne Care Ability supports participants in South East Melbourne who live in a shared arrangement and need assistance to manage daily life there. Support is built around your goals and the agreements in the house, not a one-size roster. We also help you see when supported independent living is the better description of what you need.

What are daily tasks in shared living, and why you need them

This support helps with daily life tasks when you live in a shared or group living arrangement. It can include help with cooking, cleaning your own space, personal routines, and the everyday organisation that shared homes need, as funded in the plan.

People need it when living with others is the right housing choice, but the daily load is not safe or realistic to carry alone. Without support, housemate tension grows, or one person ends up doing everything.

Supported independent living is the fuller in-home support for people who need significant help to live as independently as possible, often with drop-in or 24-hour style arrangements. Daily tasks in shared living focus on the everyday tasks of living together. We will help you and your coordinator use the right one, or both, if the plan allows.

Our shared living support process

  1. 1

    Step 1: Understand the household

We ask who you live with, which tasks are yours, and where conflict or risk already exists.

  2. 2

    Step 2: Agree your tasks

We list the daily tasks we will support. We do not take over another housemate’s responsibilities unless that is agreed and funded.

  3. 3

    Step 3: Set the roster

Visits match the times the house actually needs support, such as meals or mornings.

  4. 4

Step 4: Review house and goals

If housemates, tasks, or your independence goals change, we update the agreement.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same as supported independent living?

Not always. Daily tasks in shared living help with everyday tasks when you live with other people. Supported independent living is broader in-home support for participants who need significant daily help to live independently. Some plans use SIL language for shared homes. Bring your plan and we will help you match the request to the right support without guessing.

Will you support my housemates as well?

Only if each person has their own funding and agreement. We do not use your support to provide care for someone else in the house.

Can you help with house rules and conflict?

We can support you to follow the routines you agreed and to prepare for conversations. We are not a tenancy tribunal and we do not discipline housemates. Serious safety issues should be raised with the house operator, your coordinator, or emergency services if someone is in danger.

Does this support pay the rent?

No. Rent and other housing costs are separate from daily task support. Tenancy assistance is a different support if you need help with the lease itself.

Can I keep living with the people I choose?

Yes. We do not move you into a house of our choosing as a condition of support. If you want help to find a home, that conversation belongs with tenancy assistance or your housing provider.

Sort daily tasks in your shared home

Tell us who you live with and which daily tasks are breaking down. We will confirm whether shared living support fits, and whether SIL should be discussed as well.
