Supported Independent Living in South East Melbourne

Living in your own home gets fragile when the support you need is spread across too many people, or when nights, meals, and personal care have no reliable cover. Families hold it together until the roster breaks. Supported independent living, usually called SIL, is NDIS support for people who need significant help with daily life so they can live as independently as possible.

Melbourne Care Ability provides SIL-style in-home support for participants across South East Melbourne when the plan includes it and we can staff it safely. Support is built around your home, your routines, and the choices you make about who helps you. We explain how SIL differs from a few hours of personal care or household help, so you are not signed into more support than you want, or left with less than you need.

What is supported independent living, and why you need it

Supported independent living is help with daily life for participants with higher support needs, usually in the home, so they can live as independently as possible. It can include personal care, household routines, and support to manage the day, delivered as a package rather than as a single short visit. Some people live alone. Some live with others.

You may need SIL if drop-in visits are not enough to keep you safe and well, or if you want to move toward a home of your own and the support has to be designed around that home. SIL is not the building. If the building needs to be specialist housing, that is specialised disability accommodation, which is separate.

Daily tasks in shared living may be the better fit if your need is help with everyday tasks in a house you share, without a full SIL arrangement. We will compare these honestly with you and your coordinator.

Our supported independent living process

  1. 1

Step 1: Understand the day and night

We map the support you need across the day, including personal care, meals, community time, and any overnight needs.

  2. 2

Step 2: Check the home and the plan

We confirm the funding approach, who else lives there, and whether the home can support the roster.

  3. 3

    Step 3: Design and agree

You review a service agreement that states tasks, times, worker matching, and what happens if a worker is unavailable.

  4. 4

Step 4: Start, handover, and review

Support begins with a clear routine. We review it when your health, housemates, or goals change.

Frequently asked questions

Is SIL the same as having a support worker for a few hours a week?

No. A few hours of personal care or household help can be life-changing, but SIL is a fuller package for people who need significant daily support to live independently. If your needs are smaller, we will say so and point you to personal care or household tasks instead.

Does SIL include the rent?

No. SIL is the support. Rent, SDA payments, and board are housing costs. Tenancy assistance can help with lease tasks. SDA is a different support if you need a specialist dwelling.

Can I choose my support workers?

We ask for your preferences and match where we can. A full SIL roster usually needs more than one worker, including backups when someone is on leave. We will explain that before you agree.

Do you offer 24-hour support?

Only when your plan funds that level of support and we can staff it safely, including overnight if required. We will not advertise 24-hour care we cannot actually roster.

Can SIL happen in a home I share?

Yes, if that is how you live and each person’s funding is respected. Shared living daily tasks may still be the better description of a smaller shared-home support. We will look at the plan with you rather than forcing the SIL label.
